Kick Start Your Wellness: A Guided Meditation

Slices of Sanity in Insane Times

Sanity Comes in Very Small Packages

Remember the days when our kids went to school, summer meant camp and we could hire household help? Today? All the people. All the time. At home. Every meal. Every class. Every activity. Every meeting. There they are. And there you are. No visiting. No leaving. Nothing open even if you could. And then some well-intended wellness coach comes along and preaches the importance of self-care in the times of COVID-19. You want to punch her lights out. For her utter density. She is clearly completely out of touch. Or coming unhinged. Who has time for self-care??? Just OMG! At the same time, there is this little, utterly wrung out fairy on your shoulder that is the voice of your totally neglected self. She is sincerely about to lose it because you have not been able to give her one second of attention. To make matters worse, you’ve been able to silence her temporarily through bribes of kettle-cooked Cape Cod chips and Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food but the appeal is wearing off. And frankly, she’s having blood sugar mood swings that are making her intolerable. What to do?

Tiny Steps Create a Big Shadow

I don’t know about you but I can’t even think in terms of hours anymore. Not when one days bleeds into the next and morning and evening have become interchangeable.

What I can do is think in terms of minutes.

Can’t carve out an hour to workout?

Carve out 3 minutes to do 10 squats, 10 pushups, 10 lunges.

Can’t leave the house for an hour to walk?

Take 5 and power walk your block.

Can’t get an hour of quiet time?

Put in earplugs and close the door of your room and breath deeply for 5 min.

Need a massage?

Grab a foam roller and roll out your back for 5 minutes.

When it comes to self-care, something is always better than nothing. If you did all of the above once a day, it would only cost you 18 minutes.

But you will feel worlds better.

Whatever you need to feel sane and balanced, break it down into byte-sized pieces.

No more than 5-10 minutes. Repeat throughout the day as needed.

Small steps cast a long shadow in the right light.
